How does Phelps Smart Garment System Work?

At Phelps, our Smart Garment System is a part of the laundering process which allows us to better track, launder and even sort garments. This technology allows us to ensure 100% accurate deliveries to our valued customers!

How Does SGS Work?

A chip the size of a dime is inserted into each garment and allows Phelps to identify every item issued to our individual customers. RFID identification chips possess a specific number assigned to them and should not be removed.

Before such technology was available to us, we had to hand count or do bar coding. Hand counting had a great deal of human error and if a garment had been washed multiple times then even bar codes had their problems.

RFID is the newest technology and allows us to make sure we provide exactly the number of garments you need for every job. The days of coming up short on shirts, towels, dust control or some other items are gone. The chip is located in the waistband of all pants and in the tail of all shirts and will never interfere with the wearer. It’s harmless and uses the same technology as credit cards and employee ID badges.


Step 1: Our Route Service Representatives pick your uniforms up, and returns them to our facility for laundering. Once your garments have returned to our facility, they are scanned back into our system. The garments are then placed into sling bags on our rail system to be transported to our wash floor.

Step 2: The garments are loaded into our state of the art commercial washers.

Step 3: After completing the wash cycle, garments are unloaded, placed on hangers, and sent through the tunnel to be dried and pressed.

Step 4: All garments are inspected for requested and proactively identified necessary repairs. All repairs are made before garments go back out to the customer.

Step 5: With the use of the RFID chips, each garment is bundled by customer and employee. All garments are scanned back out of our system before leaving our facility. Any missing or out of order items will be identified to ensure 100% accuracy in delivery back to the customer.


Online Customer Portal

With our Smart Garment System and RFID tracking, you are able to easily manage and monitor your account through our online portal. Our online portal allows you to track garments, add or remove employees, size exchanges, transfer employees by department or location, see real-time employee usage, request uniform repairs, and message us directly with any questions.


Smart Garment Repair App

Phelps Uniform wants your employee’s uniforms looking their best. You can now download an easy to use app to get your garments repairs fast and easy. This is quicker and easier than filling out a yellow repair tag and attaching it to the garment. The Phelps Uniform Repair App also allows you to track your garments throughout the repair process and communicate with us directly, helping us give you the best service!
